Lopez is a small community with about 2200 full-time residents. There are still many who make their living farming, fishing, and raising livestock. It is also home to a great number of artists and has a small but thriving business community. Lopez is known as the friendly island because drivers wave at each other as they pass on the road, even if you are not known to them. It is also well known for its bicycling due to the relatively level terrain. Lopezians are proud of their community and over the years worked to transform a 5 acre plot of ground near the village donated by Natalie Roush into a full-blown community center with an outdoor pavilion, a performance center, a childrens center, and a skate park. Lopez is a wonderfully unique place in the middle of the beautiful San Juan Islands.|
