Tracy Grammer in Concert, 7:30pm Known for her springwater-clear alto and guitar playing that is by turns percussive and delicate, she is also a masterful storyteller with an ease and charisma on stage - not to mention a great sense of humor. Tracy rose to acclaim as half of the "postmodern, mythic American folk" duo, Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. From 1998-2001, the duo released three internationally celebrated, folk chart-topping albums featuring Carter's mytho-poetic Americana songcraft, and in 2002 toured with Joan Baez, both as featured artists and Baez's band members. Called "the new voice of modern folk music," the duo was clearly in its ascendancy when in July 2002, Carter suffered a fatal heart attack while the duo was on tour. Paper Tigers Movie Viewing and Discussion, 4:30pm-8:30pm Please join the Lopez Island Family Resource Center and the Lopez Island School District on September 23rd from 4:30-8:00 pm at Grace Episcopal Church to view the movie "Paper Tigers". After the movie is over, we will have conversations about what compassion means to each of us and how we can all contribute to further strengthening our compassionate community. This is the first step of a community effort to strengthen our community with a new approach merging science with compassion. A follow-up training will be held on October 14th with a Dr. John Glenewinkel, Superintendent of the Curlew and Republic School Districts and OSPI trainer from the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Instruction.

Paper Tigers follows a year in the life of an alternative high school that has radically changed its approach to disciplining its students, becoming a promising model for how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families. "Stressed brains can't learn." That was the nugget of neuroscience that Jim Sporleder, principal of a high school riddled with violence, drugs and truancy, took away from an educational conference in 2010. Three years later, the number of fights at Lincoln Alternative High School had gone down by 75% and the graduation rate had increased five-fold. Paper Tigers is the story of how one school made such dramatic progress.

Following six students over the course of a school year, we see Lincoln's staff try a new approach to discipline: one based on understanding and treatment rather than judgment and suspension. Using a combination of verite and revealing diary cam footage, Paper Tigers is a testament to what the latest developmental science is showing: that just one caring adult can help break the cycle of adversity in a young person's life. Please join us for this important event and discussions about compassion in the Lopez Community. Please RSVP if you plan to attend either event to barbara@lifrc.org. Location: LCCA Phone: 360-468-4771 Website: http://kpjrfilms.co/paper-tigers/
