WA STATE FERRIES: Starting with the Spring Schedule that began on Sunday March 20th, there are 2 changes in the reservation system. Please note that when sailing with a reservation from Anacortes to the San Juans, you must be through the ticket booth 30 minutes before your departure time or you will lose your reservation. The old rule was one had to be in line for the ticket booth.  The second change is you can now make reservations 2 hours ahead of a sailing instead of 3 hours.

Mike VanQuickenborne "Seriously Funny; Philosophy and the Cinema" – 6:30 pm, Woodmen Hall, , 4102 Fisherman Bay Road.  A special night to celebrate the Lopez Island Library's very popular film collection and our island's love of a good movie! Join the library for a fun evening as we welcome Humanities Washington Speaker Mike VanQuickenborne. Can films teach us about philosophy? Is what we feel while watching a film linked to what we learn? In this unique take on philosophy, film and comedy, professor Mike VanQuickenborne shares brief clips from films to start a conversation about philosophy and explore issues raised by films. He believes philosophy can be a laughing matter.

Business Startup 101 – 9 am to Noon, San Juan County Legislative Hearing Room, 55 Second Street, Friday Harbor, WA – Entrepreneurs are invited to attend the San Juan County Economic Development Council's upcoming FREE half-day workshop entitled "Business Startup 101" on Thursday, May 5th. Participants will learn the building blocks of starting a successful business from experts in the legal, accounting and banking fields. Searching for Snakes: A Garter Snake Interpretive Walk – 11:30 am – 1 pm – Hummel Lake Preserve, Lopez Island.   Join Leonard on a walk through the Land Bank’s Hummel Lake Preserve, while he simultaneously looks for garters while talking about what makes them (and other snakes) so special.  Children of all ages are welcome, clothes and shoes that can get a little dirty (in the event of post-rain mud) are preferred.  Limited space available; RSVP to Tanja Williamson at 360-378-4402 or email tanjaw@sjclandbank.org.

Vintage Honkytonk Country Dance - Fundraiser for KLOI – 7 – 11 pm, Woodmen Hall, 4102 Fisherman Bay Road.  COME ON OUT AND LETS "CUT A RUG AND PAINT THE TOWN" ON SATURDAY NIGHT!! ENJOY THE SPIRIT AND TIMES OF HANK WILLIAMS!!  KLOI Community radio and the Shark Reef Rounders present a Country Dance at Woodman Hall featuring CALEB KLAUDER and his fabulous COUNTRY BAND from Portland, Oregon. This will be a fundraising event to support KLOI!  Doors open at 7 PM, Dancing Lessons at 7:30 PM, Showtime 8 PM til 11PM.  TICKET PRICE $15.

Free Day at Spencer Spit State ParkAll Day, 521 Bakerview Road, Lopez Island - Discover Pass is not required on MAY 8! We are celebrating Mother's Day. Come and enjoy the park. Build a fire in the beach pits, go for a hike, or enjoy the natural beauty of the spit with friends and family.  Please help us Leave No Trace by keeping your furry friends on a leash at all times and picking up their poop. Also, put out fires completely.  Remember, the park is always FREE to enter if you hike or bike in!  Hope to see you!  *Please note, free days apply only to day use (not overnight stays or rented facilities), A Discover Pass will still be required on these days to access lands managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.  www.parks.state.wa.us/687

1710 Versailles – 7 – 9 PM, Grace Episcopal Church, 70 Sunset Lane off of Fisherman Bay Road, Lopez Village.  The Salish Sea Early Music Festival continues at Grace Episcopal Church.  Performers are John Lenti~theorbo & baroque guitar, Joanna Blendulf~viola da gamba, and Jeffrey Cohan~baroque flute.  The concerts just get better and better. Lopez Island Garden Club - "Plant Sale and Silent Auction" – 10 AM – Noon - Woodmen Hall, 4102 Fisherman Bay Road.  Come to the Annual Garden Club Plant Sale and Silent Auction. This event is an island favorite, and is always very well attended by our community. This is a fundraiser, with all proceeds donated to the Lopez Island Garden Club Scholarship Fund and to the L.I.F.E. SATURDAY – MAY 14, 2016

Beekeeping Field Day – 2 – 4 PM – Crowfoot Farm, 3759 Port Stanley Road, Lopez Island.  WEATHER DEPENDENT !!!!   Call if the weather is iffy. (Eric Hall, 4748), Back-up dates: May 15, 21, and 22.  Observe and/or participate in doing a routine hive inspection. Learn how to start a smoker. Learn how to remove combs and recognize patterns in them. Look for eggs, brood and drones, look for the queen, see what mites look like, etc. Learn how to make a split. This is also a great opportunity for beekeepers to simply get together, ask each other questions and share their experiences. Bring a veil and bee suit. Sterilize (boil) your hive tool if you bring it.
